Hey Wait a Minute, Side Bar 2

By John Tooby

Tooby mentions a Sept. 21, 2000, memo by Susan Lindee, a historian of science at the University of Pennsylvania, who wrote that "Neel had Venezuelan governmental permission to carry out the vaccine program—the telegram providing that permission is in his papers." But, as Tierney's article pointed out, Lindee has since corrected herself and has indicated that the papers in Neel's archive do not indicate that he had government permission. (The telegram in question is dated April 19, 1968—Neel's expedition was in January of 1968—and was written by Marcel Roche, a member of Neel's own research team, who was accepting a donation of some sort.)
