Patrick Tierney, author of Darkness in El Dorado: How Scientists and Journalists Devastated the Amazon-W.W. Norton & Co., 2000, is a Center Associate/Visiting Scholar in the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS), University Center for International Studies (UCIS), University of Pittsburgh. He holds a BA (1980) from the University of California at Los Angeles in Latin American Studies and is the author of The Highest Altar: The Story of Human Sacrifice (1989). Mr. Tierney, a freelance journalist who resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has been a CLAS center associate/visiting scholar for approximately ten years. This honorary appointment involves no remuneration from or regular duties carried out for the University of Pittsburgh but provides independent or visiting researchers with access to the renowned Eduardo Lozano Latin American Collection at the University of Pittsburgh libraries.
